What is living nice?

5:30 a.m. in the summertime, and I had bass on my mind—largemouth, to be exact. Cruising south on a Midwest back road, windows down, AC humming, Marlboro lit, and one of the best damn average cups of coffee you could ever have sitting right there in my cupholder. I was headed to a pond an old-timer had told me about.

On that drive, I remember thinking to myself, “Living’s nice.”

I drive a lot, but for some reason, that drive was absolutely perfect. The weather was just right, the AC dial set in the sweet spot, my cigarette had the smoothest pull, and the same brand of coffee I drink every single day tasted like it had been crafted just for me.

Nothing about that morning should have been different. As a longtime fisherman, I’ve done this exact thing hundreds of times. But eventually, I realized the takeaway from that drive—where my head was at in that moment was exactly what I needed more of in my life.

Living the way I was right then felt... nice. I wasn’t at rock bottom, nor was I riding a high. Everything—me and the world around me—was simply nice.

Don’t overlook those nice moments while chasing the highs and lows. Appreciate the times when you’re just living.
